It is difficult to find a job during a pandemic. Businesses often freeze or at least slow down hiring new employees because they are uncertain if they will be continuing to operate or be profitable. So, this can limit job opportunities for applicants. However, there are some ways to increase your probability of landing one of the available opportunities.
1. Update Your Resume
An old, outdated resume makes it much more difficult to find a job, especially during a pandemic. Be sure to highlight your accomplishments at your previous employers using data and statistics to support them. A resume is not the place to list your entire career history and give every detail of each job.
2. Talk to People
Networking is very important to succeed in any career. The odds of someone getting a job are significantly higher if someone within the company recommends them. So, talk to people at the companies and in roles, you wish to work. Get to know what their jobs are, why they like working for that company, and be sure to at least buy them a coffee or something while you talk, if possible.
3. Update Your Social Media Resume
LinkedIn and other popular online career sites are often the first stop for any recruiter. If you lost your job, be sure to update that detail in your profile. Adjust your profile settings to show that you are actively seeking employment opportunities. Make certain that all your social media resumes are consistent. In addition, companies often check candidates’ social media presence. Remember to keep your social media professional.
4. Practice Video Interviews
Video interviews have increased in popularity because of the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Most people are uncomfortable talking on camera. However, you need to become more comfortable doing so because employers are doing them a lot. Be sure to wear nice clothes on your full body, not just on your waist and above. You never know if you have to stand up for some reason.
5. Be Flexible
Employers are dealing with more things than normal. This can cause interviews to be rescheduled on short notice. Be patient and reschedule the interview. You may also need to be more flexible with your work hours, remote-work options, and compensation. This does not mean that you should take a job that you hate.
